Even if the Atkins Diet is a proven, effective way to lose weight, there remains a lot of serious questions as to what may be some of the long-term effects of having a diet rich in protein and high in fat.

The theories brought about by Dr. Robert Atkins remain unproven and health and nutrition experts remain concerned with the diet's approach since studies have shown that diets which propose extreme intake of protein and fats could lead to a host of health problems and expose people to heart disease in the long-run. Furthermore, the Atkins Diet does not allow high intake of fruits and vegetables, which are known to be great sources of vitamins, antioxidants, and fiber. Most nutrition and health experts highly recommend the intake of fruits and vegetables because of the numerous proven health benefits that these foods have.

So, is the Atkins Diet a program that we would recommend to people who are trying to lose weight? Our answer to this is "No". This is one diet that we cannot recommend to people. Even if the Atkins Diet is proven to be effective for losing weight, we think that the long-term health risks far outweigh the benefits of this approach. What we would recommend is for you to look at safer options such as the other top weight loss diets that we have featured on this site.
